Blueberries

I marked my calendar and then waited with great anticipation to go blueberry picking. Strawberry season was so enjoyable that I couldn't wait to pick blueberries and compare the two. As I approached the entrance, the blueberries' vibrant color was evident. I drove down the little lane noticing how large even the "late bloomers" were. I was so excited!

After my experience, I'm thoroughly convinced that blueberry picking is a new favorite! It wasn't back-breaking or tiresome. Instead, I found myself relaxed as a Lake Michigan breeze swept through the farm while I picked from an abundance of blueberries. I chose to pick at S. Kamphuis Blueberries (skamphuisblueberries.com); be mindful that you do have to pay in cash. At $1.70 per pound, this was not an expensive endeavor. I walked away spending less than $30 on 4 pounds of blueberries, coffee mugs, a cup of coffee, and a blueberry donut.

When you arrive, you can either grab one of their containers, or you can bring your own. If you use one of their pails, they'll transfer your picked blueberries to a paper bag when you check out. I used my handy-dandy pail from home. (I had kept the weight of the pail taped to the side after picking strawberries.)
I think I picked for 45 minutes and got around 4 pounds of berries. (Granted, I was eating some while I went and taking pictures throughout that time as well.) I chose one lane and started picking. There was a copious amount of blueberries on each bush, so I didn't have to walk  very far.

After picking more blueberries than necessary (I still only spent around $6 on the actual blueberries), I grabbed my coffee and donut and made my way to their quaint seating area. It seemed as if my senses were heightened-- the breeze felt more refreshing, the coffee smelled warm and inviting, the donut melted in my mouth, and my mind was fully engaged in Wuthering Heights. It was the perfect way to end an enjoyable time picking blueberries, and it was such a peaceful experience that I highly recommend picking at this farm.

Once I got home, I knew that the first order of business was making biscotti. This is a family-favorite and is infinitely better with fresh blueberries as opposed to canned.

Blueberry and White Chocolate Biscotti

A delicious "cookie" to enjoy with coffee, tea, or simply by itself.

Sorry, but this one's a secret... At least for now.
